"Valley of the Kings"
This dramatic oil painting captures a commanding view above Waipi'o Valley, often called the "Valley of the Kings." The composition is dominated by the sheer dark cliff face that plunges sharply into the bright, turquoise Pacific Ocean, rendered with intense, deep purple and ochre shadows. Jefferson employs his signature Impressionistic brushwork to capture the light hitting the cliff tops, contrasting the luminous blue sky and the clear water below. The small, white waves breaking on the secluded beach at the base of the cliffs emphasize the immense scale of the landscape.
